BAGHPAT (UP): Three Muslim clerics travelling in a train in UP were allegedly assaulted by unidentified persons leaving them injured, police said on Thursday.
The clerics boarded the train at Delhi last night, and heading to their village in Baghpat when they had a tiff with some youths who allegedly beat them up, SP Baghpat Jaiprakash Singh said.
However the victims refused any tiff with the unidentified youth and said they were assaulted for no reason. The victims later got down at Amhaida station and lodged their complaint against the assaulter and a case was registered against six unidentified persons at the Baghpat Kotwali police station.
One of the men, Israr, says when he asked the attackers why they were hitting him, “they said nothing and kept assaulting us”. He added that one of the attackers said “rumaal kyon pehente ho,” apparently referring to the keffiyeh or scarf often worn by Muslim men.
It has also been alleged that the three ‘maulvis’- Gulzar, Israr and Abrar – were pushed out of of the train, but the police did not confirm it. Baghpat Kotwali incharge B Kumar said that the case was being transferred to the Railway police.
