Islam instructs muslims to wholeheartedly help the needy and the destitute without considering their color, creed, race or religion. To become a good muslim one has to rise above such biases and prejudices. We must keep in our mind that humanity is just one family. All humans are from one father and one mother.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (RA) relates that Allah’s Messenger (SAWS) said:“The entire humanity is Allah’s family, and Allah loves him most from among this family, who benefits the family most.”[Mishkaat]
Hazrat Jarir bin Abdullah (RA) reported that Prohet (SAWS) said:“He who is not merciful to people Allah will not be merciful to him.”[Bukhari & Muslim]
Allah likes those who are kind to Allah’s creatures. A muslim should be kind to all the creatures, including animals and birds. Kind treatment with Allah’s creatures makes a person eligible for his mercy in this world and hereafter.
Decent behaviour with people has been specifically mentioned in this tradition although all creatures are covered by it.
The verse of the Holy Quran, which so comprehensively covers this concept of service to humanity, reads,
O people of Islam, “You are the best people ever raised for the good of mankind because you have been raised to serve others; you enjoin what is good and forbid evil and believe in Allah.” (3:111)
The fundamental qualities that we must all acquire to serve mankind or to develop a passion to serve mankind are: love for humanity, kindness in our hearts for others, a charitable disposition, humility, honesty, a thirst for knowledge, a desire to share knowledge with others and a constant desire to strive in the cause of Allah by doing good. We must be a people from whom goodness flows towards others.
The teachings of the Holy Quran and the example of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) direct us on how best to serve mankind. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) practiced the teachings of the Holy Quran to the fullest extent and is the best example of the true representation of service to mankind and to Allah.
